World-Class Angling On The Animas River

A Guide To Fly Fishing In Durango

Durango is a premier Colorado fly fishing destination. With the Animas River flowing right through the heart of downtown and several Gold Medal waters just a short drive away, the perfect catch is always within reach.

Fishing The Legendary Animas River

As one of the last free-flowing rivers in the state, the Animas offers diverse water, which includes technical pocket water and wide, deep pools. It is home to trophy-sized Rainbow and Brown trout that thrive in our high-alpine ecosystem.

Best Season

Late Spring through late Autumn.

Durango Fly Fishing Seasons & Hatches

Fishing conditions on the Animas change with the seasons. Understanding hatches and water conditions will help you plan the perfect trip.

Spring (Mar-May)

Look for Blue-Winged Olive (BWO) hatches as the water warms. High-water runoff usually begins in late May.

Summer (Jun-Aug)

The prime season for dry fly action. Expect heavy caddis and stonefly hatches in the mornings and evenings.

Fall (Sep-Nov)

The best time for trophy Browns. Spectacular colors and lower water levels make for incredible sight fishing.

Winter (Dec-Feb)

Quiet and technical. Tailwater sections stay open for midges and nymphing during the warmest parts of the day.

Tips For The Animas River From Local Pros

Make the most of your fly fishing trip with advice from our team who lives and fishes in Durango year-round.

Best Spots

Target the eddies near the 32nd Street Bridge or the oxygen-rich water below the Santa Rita whitewater park.

Time of Day

During summer heat, fish early or late. Midday is best for winter midge hatches.

Recommended Gear

A 9-foot 5-weight rod is the standard. Bring plenty of 4x and 5x tippet and a variety of attractor dries.

Catch & Release

To preserve our Gold Medal status, we strongly encourage catch and release. Please handle all trout with wet hands.
